Winter Program
Below is the tentative schedule for the 2009/2010 winter program. Those of you who participated last year know that you will receive a detailed email a few days before the program starts, outlining what time the event starts/ends, and what you should bring. It is very important to read these emails. Really, it is.
The Canadian Yachting Association Coastal Navigation course is being taught in 5 separate weekends. If you are interested in gaining this certification, participants must be in attendance for all 5 of these courses. The CYA Coastal Nav. course will help you prepare for the written navigation exam you will have to take in order to obtain both your level III W.O. rank and a Transport Canada Mates or Masters license. Parents, if interested, may also register for this course. Participants will be awarded a certificate from the Canadian Yachting Association after completing this course. Cost for the course is $275 and payments may be made in instalments over the winter to Bytown Brigantine via Mary Acton-Bond.
Regulations have changed for the Advanced Marine First-Aid course and it is now a five-day course valid for five years. Those who have taken a two-day Advanced Course should check their certificates to make sure they have not expired. Cost for the Advanced 1 st -Aid is course is $275. The Marine Basic costs $125.
The VHF Restricted Operators Course costs $50 for two days of instruction. The license does not expire.
Please be advised that there are bursaries available for most winter program costs. Please contact Mary Acton-Bond to receive information on bursaries at least 2 weeks before the beginning of the selected courses.
I look forward to another adventurous winter with many faces old and new. Thanks 'for being part of the crew!'

Program Coordinator

About the Winter Program
The Winter Program is designed for those trainees
and officers who are interested in refreshing skills
and knowledge learned aboard the vessels. At the same
time it gives the opportunity to continue working
towards a higher level of expertise and the
possibility of a position in either of the summer
programs as a crew member.
Please note that the winter program is not limited
to our summer trainees, though there will be special
emphasis on those wishing to become Officers. We
would like to invite trainees, friends, family, and
parents to participate, learn what we have to offer,
or to volunteer on the work parties.
The following is a schedule of teaching sessions,
training days, tests, volunteering, camaraderie,
motivating, exciting, team building and
friendship—all a part of Bytown Brigantine.
Some of the courses are taught by outside
organizations and therefore have associated costs and
some of the weekends involve a sleepover on the Bunk
Barge, and include a small fee for food.
Please Contact the Bytown Office
to sign up for any or all of the sessions listed
below. For many of the courses we must meet a minimum
number of people to make the course happen, so please
do not delay. For more information regarding the
Winter Program please do not hesitate to contact us
at (613) 596-6258.
Also going on
during the winter are work parties. The work parties
occur on weekends either at the Bytown Brigantine
office or on the ships. If you are interested,
check out the work party
schedule. Please let the office know if you want
to come out and help.
