Tall Ship Voyages Aboard STV Fair Jeanne
Sailing on Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands – Ages 15-19
Set sail aboard the 110' brigantine Fair Jeanne for any of the
exciting voyages. Our young trainees discover the adventure and thrill of
working as a team to meet the challenge of sailing an authentic tall ship.
Throughout each voyage regular instruction and shipboard routine will be
maintained. You may find yourself hoisting the sails, steering the ship,
standing anchor watches and helping cook meals too! Perhaps you’ll climb high
up into the rigging to furl the sails or out onto the bowsprit to free a sail–something new all the time. Trainees live and eat aboard the ship while
sailing to various ports and anchorages in Canada and the U.S. Most importantly,
trainees share this great adventure with a crew of new friends!
Fair Jeanne has a full-time crew of 6, and trainees number between
18 and 24. Most of the voyages on Fair Jeanne operate out of
Kingston, Ontario and involve passage through part of the St. Lawrence Seaway
and Thousand Islands area. Technical specifications about the ships are found on the Fleet page.

Black Jack and Island Adventure Camp
On the upper Ottawa River – Ages 12-14
An exciting program that combines sails aboard the 87' brigantine Black Jack
with small boat sailing aboard our two traditional 27' Navy whalers. Discover
the adventure and thrill of sailing authentic traditional sailing vessels
and exploring the wilderness of the historic Ottawa River. Participants set
sail from Britannia Yacht Club aboard Black Jack destined for Bytown’s
18 acre seamanship adventure camp facility on Alexandria and Simcoe Islands,
located near Fitzroy Provincial Park. On the last day, trainees line Black
Jack’s rail and yards in the rigging for a ceremonial entering to
the Britannia Yacht Club’s harbour with an impressive show for relatives
gathered for the welcome dockside.
In the tradition of the Ottawa River’s logging history, the trainees live
aboard an authentic floating bunkhouse from the period. Trainees spend their
time sailing the various boats, including the Black Jack, and learning
new skills—with lots of time left over for swimming, campfires, Y-games and
fun. Everyone is divided into ‘watch’ teams working together sailing the
boats and sharing responsibility for safety watches, meal preparation and
adventure course activities. Most importantly, our trainees share this great
adventure with a crew of new friends!

Officer in Training (OT)
A limited number of Officer Trainee (OT) positions are available through
Bytown Brigantine. This is part of an ongoing effort to train and develop young
leaders to crew aboard our ships in the years to come. Preference is shown to
young people with an aptitude to accept responsibility for their actions coupled
with a strong desire to take an active role in traditional tall ship sailing. In
addition to routine duties, Officer Trainees are expected to maintain a study
schedule leading to Petty Officer level. Applicants seeking these positions are
encouraged to apply by sending a letter and resume detailing their background,
interests, previous leadership experience and sailing experience, if any.
During the breaks between sessions, Officers in Training on Fair Jeanne
will be accommodated aboard ship. Officers in Training involved in the Black
Jack Island Program will need to find lodging ashore between sessions. If
you need help with a billet please contact the Bytown Office.
