While the ships are laid up for the winter, Bytown Brigantine runs a
shore-based training program to develop knowledge and skills necessary
for certification.
We need adult volunteers that are interested in learning all about
sailing tall ships, seamanship, navigation, etc. in order to become
qualified as Watch Officers and help out on voyages where the regular
crew might not be available (early summer or late fall when they are
usually in university.)
Our fleet consists of two tallships, the Fair Jeanne and the
Black Jack, and auxillary vessels that support the Black Jack
Island Adventure Camps on the upper Ottawa River.
See what is going on aboard Fair Jeanne. She usually operates
out of Kingston, Ontario, hosting various voyages, including the trainee
voyages for trainees 14-19 years of age, Elderhostel for trainees 55+
and Adult voyages for trainees 20+.
The late Captain Thomas G. Fuller, D.S.C.** M.I.D. R.C.N., who demonstrated
throughout his life, the principles of self reliance, initiative and
resourcefulness that lie at the core of Bytown’s programs.

In the fall, usually sometime in October, Bytown Brigantine hosts
the Annual Awards and Reunion Banquet where program participants can
reunite along with friends, family, crew, volunteers and board members.
A silent auction is also held to raise funds to support the programs.
Read about last the event from last year, or find out about the upcomming
event.
In the early fall Bytown Brigantine Foundation hosts a golf tournament
to raise funds to support the programs. Here you will find a write
up about the last event, or information and registration for the upcomming
tournament.
As you can see, there is
a lot of information here! Justifiably so, because sailing tall ship
is a serious undertaking, one which Bytown Brigantine takes seriously.
If after reading these pages you still have questions, or cannot find
what you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact the foundation
office at (613) 596 6258 or email
.
When the Foundation Director sends a letter to volunteers the same
information will appear here. Other information of interest to volunteers,
about the Annual Awards Banquet, or the Golf Tournament, for instance,
will be posted here as well.
Hundreds of hours of volunteer effort goes into getting our two
brigantines ready for the busy summer programs. Take a look at what
is on the plan and get an idea of how much work is involved.
Nautical Interest
Items of interest to those interested in nautical things. Ropework
projects, book reviews, definitions of tall ship terms.
This is a web-based version of the Trainee Logbook that every
program participant is issued. Lists everything you will need to learn
going through the certification process. It's a bit rough around the
edges, but it gives you an idea of the types of things our trainees
learn at different stages.
This is a collection of different sizes (i.e. resolutions) of images
suitable for use as Windows desktop wallpaper. Different sailing scenes
are depicted.
